Three basic methods can be used to help elongate the musculotendosis unit: manual or mechanical passive stretching, active inhibition, and self-stretching (static and dynamic). When range of motion is limited due to soft tissue flexibility issues, we try to use all three techniques with an emphasis on strengthening as to maintain any new range of motion.
Soft tissue yields more easily to stretching if the muscle is warm when the stretch is applied. This can be achieved through ultrasound, massage, and most effectively through exercise.
